Building Wealth When You're Self-Employed

  • Webinar
  • Starts May 19 at 5:00 PM UTC

A practical framework for self-employed Canadians who want to stop reacting to finances and start building long-term wealth intentionally.

The problem

You're good at running your business. But what about building wealth from it?

When you're self-employed, nobody sets up a pension for you. There's no employer matching your RRSP. No automatic payroll savings. And with fluctuating income, taxes to set aside, and a business to run, investing often gets pushed to the back burner indefinitely.

"How much tax do I owe?" and "Can I deduct this?" are important questions. But they're reactive ones. This webinar is about becoming intentional and using your income strategically to build financial security over time.

Most self-employed people never receive a financial roadmap. This webinar is designed to help you build one.

In 60 minutes, you'll get a clear, practical framework for wealth building as a self-employed Canadian without complicated jargon and with strategies that apply to your situation.

The shift

From reactive to intentional

Before

→ "How much tax do I owe?"

→ "Can I deduct this?"

→ Investing feels out of reach

→ Not sure where to start

After

→ "How do I use my income strategically?"

→ "How do I build financial security?"

→ A clear system — even on irregular income

→ "I finally have a roadmap."

What we'll cover

Six sections. One clear framework.

How wealth building works when you're self-employed

No pension, no matching but significant flexibility. CPP/QPP explained. Why the self-employed actually have an advantage, if they use it intentionally.

Business money vs. personal money

Revenue ≠ income. Profit ≠ spendable money. How to know what you can safely use and how to build a simple pay-yourself system

Where your money goes — the three buckets

Tax savings, emergency fund, long-term investing. Why the order matters, and how to make progress even when cash flow is uneven.

Your wealth-building toolkit — TFSA, RRSP, FHSA

How each account works for self-employed Canadians. How RRSP contribution room is calculated on self-employment income and why it can be a significant advantage.

A framework for deciding what to do next

When TFSA makes sense. When RRSP makes sense. How to build investing consistency when income isn't predictable. Not just information but an actual decision framework.

Common mistakes that slow wealth building

Investing before setting aside taxes. Over-contributing to RRSP in low-income years. Assuming incorporation solves everything. What to avoid and what to do instead.

About me

I’m Ronika Khanna, CPA, CA, and CFA and founder of Montreal Financial.

I help Canadian small business owners and self-employed professionals make more confident financial decisions, from taxes and accounting to saving, investing, and long-term financial planning.

Over the past 15+ years, I’ve worked with hundreds of business owners who are excellent at what they do but often feel uncertain about how to manage their finances strategically. Many are earning income without a clear roadmap for building long-term financial security.

My approach focuses on simplifying complex financial concepts into practical frameworks that people can actually use in real life without overly complicated jargon or intimidating financial advice.

This webinar is designed to help self-employed Canadians think more intentionally about wealth building, taxes, and financial decision-making.

FAQ

Common questions

Is this investment advice?

No — this is financial education. We cover how accounts work, how to think about sequencing your savings, and common mistakes to avoid. For personalized investment recommendations, you'll want to work with a licensed financial advisor. This webinar will help you have much better conversations with one.

I'm incorporated — is this relevant for me?

Yes. The personal accounts (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA) are relevant regardless of your structure. Investing specifically inside your corporation is a separate topic though. I will be covering that in a dedicated webinar in June.

What if my income is really irregular?

This webinar is specifically designed for people in that situation. Managing irregular income is one of the core topics we cover.

When will I get access to the recording?

Within one to two days after the live session. You can watch and refer back to it anytime, with no expiry.

Is this relevant for Quebec residents?

Yes. Quebec-specific considerations, including QPP, will be noted where relevant.

I'm an Ask Ronika member — do I need to register here?
